How We Treat

At Edgar Family Chiropractic, we tailor each treatment to your body and your needs. Our chiropractors are trained in many diverse techniques and take a whole-body approach. Treatments can include any and all of the following therapies: muscle therapy, joint mobilizations, physiotherapy modalities (such as ultrasound, interferential current, heat/cold therapy), medical acupuncture and rehabilitation exercises. These comprehensive chiropractic treatments can last for 30-40 minutes and sometimes longer depending on the complexity of the condition that is being treated.

The following are examples of some of the many different treatment techniques our chiropractors use at our Burlington Clinic

Muscle Therapy

Our chiropractors are trained in many different muscle techniques which they use in order to reduce pain, tension and strain in the muscles. This in turn helps our joints move better and we feel overall better. Some of the muscle therapy techniques we use include Active Release Technique, Trigger Point Therapy, and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitated Stretching (PNF) just to name a few.

Joint Mobilizations/Adjustments

The purpose of chiropractic adjustments is to improve motion in joints that are not moving. By adjusting or restoring movement to joints, the muscles around the joints relax you feel less discomfort and more mobility. Adjustments are tailored to your needs and your age. Our chiropractic care service includes hands-on adjustments as well as instrument-directed adjustments to create the most comfortable adjustment for any patient of any age.

Physiotherapy Modalities

Physiotherapy modalities such as electrical stimulation (like interferential current and TENS), ultrasound, heat and cold are used in our treatments to reduce inflammation in the injured tissues. These modalities help to increase blood flow to injured tissues and this is what helps to reduce inflammation and improve healing time. By reducing inflammation, we are also reducing pain.

Medical Acupuncture

As part of our treatments, our chiropractors will sometimes use medical acupuncture which stimulates the flow of blood to areas where tiny needles are inserted and therefore helps with improving circulation and reducing inflammation in those areas. Acupuncture also stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain which work to reduce pain.

Rehabilitation and Exercise Prescription

One of the most effective ways to reduce your chances of re-injury is by improving strength and flexibility in your muscles, tendons and ligaments. At our chiropractic clinic, we create individual programs that address weaknesses or lack of flexibility and mobility in areas of the body and we work with you to improve these dysfunctions so that injuries do not come back.

FAQs

What kind of training and education do chiropractors have?

Chiropractors are educated as primary health care providers, with a focus on neuromusculoskeletal diagnosis and treatment. This means they are specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of anything to do with your nerves, muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, and bones.

Chiropractors are back specialists and are one of five regulated primary health care professions in Canada with the right to diagnose conditions and use the title ‘Doctor’. Their training consists of an undergraduate degree in the sciences and 4 years of graduate studies in chiropractic for a total of 8 years. Because chiropractors are a primary healthcare profession, no MD referral is necessary.

What results can I expect from treatment?

Results depend on a few factors. Age, activity level, the severity of injury and the length of time that you have had the problem are just a few factors that affect the length of your treatment. After completing a history and physical exam, your chiropractor will be able to tell you the type of treatment that will be necessary for your individual condition and how long you can expect it to last.

How often do I need to see a chiropractor?

Your chiropractor will discuss the need for ongoing care with you and it will depend on your specific problem. For some people, chiropractic treatment is like a regular physical tune-up—it helps the body deal with the daily wear and tear of life. For others, it’s simply an effective treatment when back pain or other health issues strike. Take the time to discuss with your chiropractor the level of care that’s best for you.

Examples of treatment plans:

  • Relief Care- is provided for the immediate relief of pain and discomfort. Depending on the diagnosis, your age and your physical condition, one visit, or several visits over a short period of time may be necessary.
  • Corrective Care- is provided when a condition has been ongoing for a long time. In order to heal these more chronic and complex conditions, longer treatment programs are often required and include a variety of treatment modalities.
  • Supportive or Maintenance Care- For some people, chiropractic treatment is like a regular physical tune-up. It helps the body deal with the daily wear and tear of life.
Will the adjustment hurt?

Most patients feel relief after an adjustment. Our chiropractors use gentle techniques to ensure your comfort.

How long is a session?

A typical visit lasts 30-40 minutes, depending on your personalized treatment plan.
