During pregnancy, your body is going to go through an array of hormonal and physical changes. Some of these changes will have an impact on your posture and your level of comfort. As your baby starts to grow, your center of gravity will shift, which results in your posture adjusting accordingly.
The physical changes your body will go through during pregnancy can lead to a misaligned spine, as well as joints. With regular visits to a pregnancy chiropractor, they will be able to address these issues head-on. Plus, with alignments that are specifically designed to re-establish your balance, and align your pelvis and spine, a pregnancy chiropractor can do more than help you feel better. Chiropractic care is also very beneficial for your baby.

Misaligned Pelvis during Pregnancy
Having a misaligned pelvis can not only restrict the amount of available space for your baby, but it can also make it hard for your baby to move into the best position to be born, which is rear-facing, head down. In some cases, this can lead to the mother having a difficult time delivering the baby in a natural and non-invasive way. A balanced pelvis also gives your baby a lower chance of moving into a breach or posterior position. With your baby in a not so optimal position, this can lead to a long and often more complicated delivery.
Seeing a pregnancy chiropractor is a safe and effective form of treatment during pregnancy. Not only can regular chiropractic care help manage pain in your back, hips, and joints, it can also establish pelvic balance. This can provide your baby with as much space as possible over the course of your pregnancy. You may even find that with the help of a pregnancy chiropractor, your labor and delivery can be easier and faster.

Pregnancy, although exciting and special, can be a challenge on a woman’s body with all of the changes that are happening. One of those changes is the now growing baby bump that can put strain and stress on your back. Seeing a chiropractor for care during your pregnancy can be very beneficial to you and your soon-to-arrive baby. Many chiropractors have special training in the treatment of pregnant women. Receiving chiropractic care can reduce the uncomfortable back pain associated with pregnancy, as well as help prepare your body for labour.
Lower back pain is a common discomfort in pregnant women. This is because the added weight of a growing belly can pull the spine forward, which in turn will cause the curve in the lower back to increase. A chiropractor can help relieve this pain by realigning the spine and balancing the pelvis. Prenatal chiropractic treatment involves safe and gentle adjustments, without the use of medication.
A chiropractor can adjust their techniques to fit your pregnancy. They have many tools such as pregnancy pillows or modified tables, to help you feel comfortable during treatment. One technique that is specifically designed for pregnancy is the Webster technique. This technique can help prepare the pelvis for an easier labour and delivery. The Webster technique not only removes tension on the ligaments that support the uterus, but it can also provide the baby with the room to move into the best possible position for birth. Women who receive regular chiropractic care are taking care of their nervous system. When the nervous system is working properly, the whole body is working as it should be. With this in mind, many have found that their bodies are better prepared to handle the childbirth process, and in the end, labour and delivery can be shorter than women who do not receive chiropractic pregnancy care.
Visiting a chiropractor is also beneficial after pregnancy. Chiropractic care can help new mothers with correct posture for the most comfortable position for breastfeeding, which can reduce neck and back pain. Chiropractic care is also important as your newborn grows. With all the carrying, there can be increased strain on your body. Your chiropractor may provide you with different strategies, stretches, and exercises that you can do at home in order to optimize your comfort and extend your care beyond the clinic walls.
It is important to take care of both you and baby while pregnant. There are a number of measures you may take to ensure this. Prenatal care is defined as practicing a healthy lifestyle while pregnant. Prenatal care can incorporate routines such as eating and exercising regularly, visiting your doctor, and educating yourself on birth and parenthood.
Prenatal care can also involve chiropractic, registered massage therapy, and naturopathy, as alternative and natural forms of maintaining your and baby’s health during pregnancy. Chiropractic care is defined as the maintenance of the spinal column, discs and related nerves without the use of surgery or prescription medicine. Chiropractic promotes health throughout the entire body, hence why it is deemed very safe during and after pregnancy. All chiropractors are trained to treat pregnant women, therefore investing in pregnancy chiropractic is quite common.
What Happens to the Body during Pregnancy According to the Canadian Chiropractic Association, at least 50% of women will experience back pain during pregnancy. This could also include neck pain, achy legs, peripheral swelling, muscle spasms, carpel tunnel syndrome, and Sciatica pains, among many other discomforts. The average healthy women gains about 30 pounds during pregnancy, so no wonder she may experience some pain! This weight can lead to altered biomechanics which changes the way we sleep, sit, walk, and stand during pregnancy. Further, during the third trimester, the hormone “relaxing” increases in the body to prepare for birth by loosening the joints around the pelvis. As a result, this hormone can decrease joint stability and alter the posture even further.
What Can a Pregnancy Chiropractor Do?
So what can one do about all these side effects of pregnancy? Studies have shown that manual therapies such as chiropractic and registered massage therapy can help decrease the pain and discomforts during pregnancy and labor. Chiropractic care during pregnancy, specifically, can offer a safe, effective, and drug- free method of pain relief, in addition to improving the function of your joints – to make for an easier labor period.
So how can these experts help? A pregnancy chiropractor can reduce back and pelvic pain by performing gentle spinal manipulations and soft tissue therapies to improve function. A chiropractor may also use addition modalities to relieve fatigued and achy muscles such as acupuncture, IFC, and TENS, among others, to supplement their manual treatment. As part of a comprehensive treatment approach, a good chiropractor will also recommend safe and effective stenches and exercises to do at home.
Chiropractic Care Post-Pregnancy
Post-partum care begins once the baby is born and may last about six to eight weeks. During this time, mom will need lots of rest in order for her body to heal. Once she is feeling able to be “out and about” – revisiting a chiropractor is wise. They may provide treatment to improve muscle repair and reduce aches and pains caused from labor or from day-to-day activities, such breastfeeding. A pregnancy chiropractor may also treat the baby! A chiropractor’s gentle touch can ensure that the infant is growing properly aligned, can help with any acid reflux, and/ or digestive issues, among others.

Pregnancy can be a roller coaster ride of exciting milestones and uncomfortable bodily changes; luckily those not- so- fun moments can be managed with support systems such as educational classes, midwives/ doulas, and even chiropractors! Chiropractic during pregnancy can help ease some of the physical discomfort associated with the changing body and even prepare the body for quicker labor time. However, some may still be apprehensive of this form of natural health care during such a sensitive time. Here are some commonly asked questions about chiropractic and pregnancy;
Is It Safe To Go To A Chiropractor While Pregnant?
Chiropractic care during pregnancy is deemed very safe and there are no known negative impacts to receiving treatment. While all chiropractors are educated and well- equipped to treat women before, during, and after pregnancy, many also have additional training and have invested a great deal of time during their education into fertility and pregnancy wellness for women (i.e. they have specialized). Special precautions that chiropractors take while treating a pregnant patient include the use of adjustment tables and pillows that can accommodate the growing abdomen, using gentle techniques that do not put any pressure on the belly, and showing you effective stretches to try at home that will relieve tension and reduce discomfort.
Can A Chiropractor Turn A Breech Baby?
As pregnancy goes on, the ligaments in the abdomen may become tight, this, as a result, may cause restricted movement to the growing fetus, thus why some infants in utero are in a breech position so late into a pregnancy. The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic adjustment that was developed to facilitate correct pelvic alignment and nerve function to relieve tightness in the ligaments. This allows the fetus to move freely within the womb so that he or she may move into the correct position for the birth.
Can Chiropractic Care Help With Morning Sickness?
Not only is chiropractic helpful for the structural discomforts you may experience during pregnancy, but also for other symptoms such as morning sickness. Nausea and vomiting can be a result of a pinched nerve, chiropractic treatment is one form of relief for this symptom. Ensuring that the spine is properly aligned can greatly reduce the chances of experiencing nausea and vomiting.

For those who suffer from aches and pains during pregnancy, chiropractic care is an advantageous option. During pregnancy, a women’s body goes through many changes and it is quite natural to experience pain in the lower to mid back, legs, or tendonitis, among other discomforts.
Taking painkillers may provide some temporary relief from these aches however the baby’s health may become at risk and it is an important factor to take into consideration when seeking pain relief. As a substitute, most women prefer alternative medicines and name chiropractic as one of the most effective ones. This type of treatment finds the root of the pain and treats using manual or instrumented adjustments.
During pregnancy, chiropractic treatments may include Webster’s Technique. This technique brings balance to the pelvis area by helping the surrounding muscles and ligaments relax as well as removing any constraints in the joints. It is important to see that the pelvis is in good shape so that the mother and baby will be comfortable.
Massage therapy is also offered during pregnancy which helps to de-stress the mother and will help in improving overall wellness. A good and gentle massage removes all the discomforts that a woman may suffer during pregnancy. To ensure a smooth and comfortable pregnancy and delivery, it is a good idea to obtain quality chiropractic care during pregnancy. There are many experienced practitioners who are trained well and have clinics equipped with the latest tools and who are trained in the latest techniques.
During a healthy pregnancy, women can typically gain anywhere from 25 to 35 pounds. This is a lot of extra weight that is now placed on the spine and the lower back. This extra weight can also place pressure on nerves and arteries of the pelvis and back causing major discomfort for expecting mothers.
Luckily with the help of pregnancy chiropractic care, anatomical adjustments can be made to relieve this pressure and assure that whole body alignment is maintained throughout the duration of the pregnancy. Chiropractic Care can even be beneficial prior to pregnancy as it helps to promote regular menstrual cycles, prepares the body for healthy implantation, optimizes uterine function as well as ensures proper nerve supply to reproductive organs.
During pregnancy, there are many physical changes occurring in the carrying mother’s body. Her posture becomes modified through her shoulders to offset the change in the center of gravity. This change can lead to loss of the curve in the cervical spine, often resulting in headaches. Increased breast size as the mother prepares for lactation adds additional strain to the mid and upper back and can lead to general discomfort in the upper spine. And most obviously, her growing belly creates a forward and downward pull which strains the joints and musculature of the lower back. For all of these reasons among many more, it is a great idea to seek out pregnancy chiropractic care. At Edgar Family Chiropractic we recommend Chiropractic Care during Pregnancy to all of our expecting mothers. It has been reported that about 50% of pregnant women experience back pain during their pregnancy and up to 70% of women experience back pain during labor. With stats like these, it only makes sense to seek some sort of preventative care, however, only about 21% of pregnant women with back pain seek consultation with their medical physicians.
Why so Much Pain?
Pain in pregnancy happens for two reasons. The first is that ligaments (the holding elements that hold our bones and joints together) are loosened by a pregnancy hormone called “Relaxin”. On the one hand, Relaxin is helpful because it allows the pelvis to expand in order to accommodate a growing baby, but it can also be harmful because it can sometimes create too much mobility in the joints (also known as “hypermobility”). The negative effects of Relaxin can be counteracted by strong spinal and core muscles. The second reason for pain is due to the fact that the center of gravity in the woman’s body is forced to shift forward due to the growing belly. As the curve in the low back is increased due to the forward projecting belly, it forces the mid-back to compensate and cause women to lean back. The neck, in turn, compensates by moving forward (head is therefore also forward) and this creates the “swayback” posture we often see in pregnant women. The loosening in the ligaments and the swayback posture result in extra stress on the joints and ultimately back pain. No wonder almost half of women experience back pain during their pregnancy!
Benefits of Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy-
- More comfortable pregnancy and delivery
- Reduced labour time
- Relief from back pain during pregnancy
What About Postpartum
Once the baby has been born, postpartum women have major physiological changes ahead of them as their body begins to return to where it was pre-pregnancy. As Relaxin leaves the body and the ligaments start to tighten up, it is important to make sure that the joints are properly aligned and moving well. Extra stressors on the body (such as breastfeeding, lack of sleep, carrying the baby and car seats) can also cause extra discomfort that can be alleviated with proper care and exercises.
Benefits of Chiropractic Care After Pregnancy: Post-Natal
- Hands-on care help to restore normal joint mobility and nerve function which is very important in speeding up recovery and healing.
- Individualized strengthening exercises will help to improve core strength reducing the chances of pain returning
Why Include Exercise: Pre and Post-Natal
As women move through the many stages of pregnancy, both pre and postnatal, the body goes through huge amounts of physical change as it accommodates for the growing fetus. This process is then reversed once the baby has been born. The core muscles, as well as the pelvic floor muscles, can weaken and it is important to strengthen these muscles in order to avoid chronic pain. Good posture, cardiovascular health, and strength are crucial in maintaining a healthy, and comfortable pregnancy. Drs. Maja and Cam can make individualized suggestions for proper strengthening exercises.
